Summary –
Under the direction of the Branch Manager, the Librarian is responsible for coordinating and implementing outreach services throughout the District, requiring advanced or specialized knowledge and skills. Provides professional assistance to the public in using the materials and resources available through the Library

Essential Job Functions 

  • Provides library services by working at community sites around the District and at different Ada Community Library branches as needed. These include, but are not limited to, checking in/out materials, issuing library cards, reader’s advisory, reference services, instruction & technical assistance, updating/reconciling patron accounts, etc.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates programs of interest for children, teens and/or adults (in-person or virtual).
  • Coordinates, schedules and delegates outreach events for all ACL branches.
  • Drives library vehicles (ConnectMobiles) to predetermined locations to provide services to remote patrons throughout the District.
  • Works with branch managers to develop introductory and training materials relevant to the purpose of outreach services and participates in training new staff and in cross-training staff regarding outreach; participates with other staff in developing on-going plans.
  • Develops and maintains effective partnerships with the educational community, social services agencies, recreational institutions, and other groups within the community to provide or coordinate a variety of programs, training, and services to targeted user groups.
  • Promotes library use, programs/events and services through displays, presentations, booklists, training materials, participation in community events, communications and publicity distribution.
  • Informs patrons of library policies/procedures and addresses concerns or violations in a positive manner.
  • Collaborates with marketing staff to develop effective marketing materials and/or work on special projects.
  • Participates in collection development, weeding, and maintenance of library materials.
  • Collects statistics, prepares reports, and makes recommendations on specific areas of library service.
  • Writes or participates in grant writing for needed materials, services or programs.
  • Participates in meetings/training and serves on work committees to contribute to the effectiveness of the library.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • May be asked to fill in/substitute at a branch public service desk.
  • Provides direction to library volunteers as needed
  • Implements and manages special projects as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications 

  • A Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an accredited school or currently enrolled in a MLS/MLIS program and are scheduled to graduate by end of current semester.
  • At least one year experience in a public library or equivalent experience.

  • Display a willingness to assume and visibly demonstrate mentoring and coaching, role modeling and leadership to staff members by recognizing and developing talent.

  • Ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, cultural sensitivity, and courtesy when dealing with patrons and staff.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate and perform basic troubleshooting of technology, office equipment, and computer systems including hardware and software (e.g. Google applications, electronic databases, email, and internet).
  • Knowledge of public library policies and procedures; of library acquisition, cataloging, classification, and processing procedures; of the theories and practices of collection development; of the principles of intellectual freedom and the Library Bill of Rights; of the theory and practice of reference service; including basic reference sources; of child/human development and theories of child and adult learning behaviors.
  • Must have flexibility and adaptability to work in a changing, public-facing environment.
  • Must be able to work at any ACL branch and community location with the ability to get to these sites when scheduled. On occasion may work at more than one location in a day.
  • Must have flexibility in scheduling to meet community needs. This could include some evenings, Saturdays, and/or a varied schedule from week to week.
  • Ability to obtain and/or maintain a valid Idaho driver’s license.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Works in a variety of environments including remotely from home, branch locations, schools, childcare centers, parks, or other community sites. Primarily works indoors, with some outdoor activities. Will work independently as well as around others. Primary work location subject to change.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, push/pull loaded carts of library materials, and load materials onto or into a vehicle.
  • Requires sufficient dexterity to operate office, computer, or other technical equipment.
  • Ability to hear and speak clearly and must have visual acuity to distinguish letters, words, and numbers as needed.
  • Will regularly walk, stand, sit, reach and grasp and occasionally stoop, bend or kneel throughout the workday.
  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs, stepladders, etc.
  • Ability to drive library vehicles in a variety of road and weather conditions as well as during daylight or after dark.
